Ellen Van Meir and Mariah Quiroz Among First to Earn Prestigious Certification in Insurance Law
Ellen Van Meir (partner, Dallas) and Mariah Quiroz (partner, Dallas) recently joined the ranks of the first 52 attorneys in the state of Texas to receive their Board Certification in Insurance Law from the Texas Board of Legal Specialization (TBLS).
Launched in 2023, the Board Certification in Insurance Law is awarded to Texas attorneys who pass a comprehensive six-hour examination consisting of three essays and 100 multiple-choice questions related to insurance law. Ellen serves as a member of the committee that creates and scores the certification examinations.
Certified attorneys must also have practiced law full time for at least five years as active members of the State Bar of Texas; have at least three years of experience and a yearly minimum of 30% substantial involvement in the field of insurance law; and have completed 60 hours of TBLS approved continuing legal education in insurance law, among other qualifications.

With more than two decades of experience, Ellen is a skilled counsel to primary and excess insurers on issues with respect to coverage claims handling. She is an active member of the Texas State Bar’s Tort & Insurance Practice Group, the American College of Coverage Counsel, and the Defense Research Institute.
Mariah represents international and domestic insurance companies in complex coverage matters and bad faith litigation across the country, providing counsel on claims issues involving catastrophic bodily injury, construction defects, professional negligence, and more. She serves as a member of the Dallas Bar Association’s Tort & Insurance Practice Section and the Texas State Bar’s Insurance Law Section.
